Otto Cars.

The Private Hire (PCO) sector is highly competitive, and often highly transactional. Drivers are frequently treated as numbers while vehicle rental is viewed as simple logistics.

Otto Cars exists to disrupt that standard. Built on a foundation of family values, sustainability and green miles, their rent-to-buy schemes and flexible contracts are designed to empower PCO drivers and Uber partners with the education, tools and support they need to succeed.

But as the company scaled, they faced a uniquely complex challenge. How do you project the grown-up, authoritative confidence of an industry leader, without alienating the independent drivers looking for an approachable, nurturing community?

Here’s how we built a brand system designed to bridge that gap.

Designing for authority and accessibility

Otto’s operational success relies on building deep trust with a highly independent workforce. They needed to act as a magnet for individual PCO drivers seeking a flexible career to support their families, while also presenting a highly reputable, professional profile that reflects their true scale as an industry leader.

We needed to shift the brand away from a standard automotive aesthetic and build an identity rooted in trust, leadership and human connection. The goal was to create a visual and verbal system that clearly communicated their professionalism, while maintaining the accessible, down-to-earth ethos that drives their customer retention.

A calculated visual contrast

To strike this balance, we developed a visual architecture anchored by a highly intentional colour palette.

To establish professional trust and market authority, the foundation of the brand is built on a deep, bold and sophisticated purple that reflects power, ambition and scale. We then punctuated this heavy foundation with a vibrant, energetic green accent that signals their commitment to a sustainable, electric future.

Typography also plays a crucial role in positioning the brand. By using Avenir as the core typeface, we established a typographic hierarchy that feels inherently confident and bold, yet youthful enough to avoid feeling like a rigid, traditional corporate entity.

Systematising the human touch

In the automotive sector, it’s tempting to make the vehicles the hero of the brand. For Otto, the true differentiator is their people. We created a strict visual framework to ensure the human element always takes precedence over the metal.

  • Human-centric illustration

We developed a minimal, bespoke illustration style focused entirely on depicting the team and the audience. By intentionally removing cars from the illustrations, the brand visually reinforces that its core product is support and education, not just vehicle rental.

  • The journey device

We introduced a graphic wave element, mirroring the curve of the core logo. Rendered at a subtle 90% green tint, this smooth wave device weaves effortlessly through brand photography. This represents the driver’s journey on the road and their progression with Otto, seamlessly tying the visual system together.

  • Energy-driven iconography

To support clear user journeys across digital touchpoints, we designed a custom icon suite. This also features a green energy bolt, embedding the narrative of an electric, forward-thinking future into the smallest details of the UI.

Operational empathy as a tone of voice

A strong visual identity will capture attention, while tone of voice connects and drives conversion. We developed a messaging strategy built on operational empathy and absolute integrity.

Rather than relying on corporate waffle or empty sales promises, the brand voice is highly transparent. When communicating services and industry knowledge, the tone is authoritative and assured. When speaking directly to drivers, the language shifts to become entirely accessible, empowering, and strictly jargon-free. It communicates that Otto is a true collaborative partner invested in their drivers’ long-term success.

Engineering a frictionless digital engine

Following on from their brand identity, we developed the digital infrastructure needed to deliver it. For Otto, the website needed to be a highly optimised acquisition and support engine for independent drivers.

The structural challenge was creating a digital space that felt both highly authoritative and deeply accessible. We engineered a user experience designed to build immediate trust by leveraging the new visual system, creating a frictionless interface that routes high-intent drivers exactly where they need to go.

This fully supported the use of the website as an education-first pathway. It’s designed to answer operational questions, provide transparent pricing and onboard drivers seamlessly into the Otto ecosystem without overwhelming them. The result is a website where the interface actively works to reduce friction, build community trust and drive measurable commercial growth.
